Scandals
Roblox is a beloved children’s gaming platform that may be facing a money laundering problem. According to a court filing, more than 300 users are accused of laundering money by purchasing fake in-game goods with in-game currency. On Tuesday, the proposal was submitted to a San Francisco federal judge. The findings shocked the gaming community. What is the truth?
Scandals Roblox Faces a Money Laundering Scandal. What You Need To Know
Roblox’s potential money laundering scandal has left many fans confused. This case stems almost two years after a class-action lawsuit was filed. This case claimed that Roblox arbitrarily removed certain in-game items from players after they had been sold. The settlement document also states that not all users will receive the $7.5 million payout. This is because 311 accounts have spent more than $1,000 on suspicious in-game transactions. The use of in-game currency for laundering money has been a problem in the gaming community for a long time. Stealed credit cards were used to buy virtual currency and then sell it at a discount.
Chicago law office Edelson PC filed a 2021 lawsuit against Roblox for an anonymous under-18 girl who purchased in-game items from a player. Roblox allegedly deleted the items arbitrarily and took a 30% cut of each deal. Roblox agreed to pay $7.5 million to affected users, subject to court approval. Due to their “suspicious behavior”, Roblox users will not be eligible for any money under the proposed settlement. The deal is expected to be approved by the court in the coming months.
Scandals Roblox’s Answer to the Allegations
Roblox denies any allegations of money laundering according to spokesperson William Nevius. He stated that the company would file a response within the next few days. The gaming platform has money laundering prevention measures, which is not the issue in the ongoing lawsuit. What is actually happening? Roblox allows users to trade Robux (the virtual currency used on the online gaming platform Roblox), back to the company once they reach 30,000. There is a secondary market for Robux that can be used to buy and sell Robux. This could lead to scams. Similar scams have been reported by Fortnite and other games. Roblox stated that it had taken into account laws regarding money laundering when structuring its company.
