Republicans Assail Trump’s Indictment; Democrats Say He Will Get his Day in Court

In the hothouse of American politics, reactions to the indictment against Donald Trump, the first indictment of a former president, were predictable. His fellow Republicans attacked the prosecutor for what was a purely political attack, while Democrats argued that no one should be allowed above the law.

After Trump was indicted by a New York grand juror on charges related to his $130,000 hush-money payment to an actress for adult films to silence her about an affair she claimed to have had a decade ago with Trump, even Republicans who were considering a run against him for the party’s nomination in 2024 came to his defense. Stormy Daniels, a porn star, has long denied Trump’s claim.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has not announced a 2024 presidential bid, but polls second behind Trump nationally for the nomination. On Twitter, Alvin Bragg (a Democrat) accused him of using the legal system “to advance a politically agenda” that he claimed “turns the rule law on its head.”

DeSantis stated that he would not cooperate with New York officials to extradite Trump to Florida to face the charges. However, it may not be an issue at all. Trump’s lawyer said that Trump would fly to New York to surrender to the charges.

Nikki Haley (Trump’s former ambassador at the United Nations), has announced her 2024 run as the president.

Mike Pompeo, a secretary to state under Trump’s administration, and another potential presidential contender, accused the prosecutor “playing politics.”

South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott stated that he was another candidate. He said in a statement that “this pro-criminal New York DA failed to uphold law for violent criminals, but weaponized the law towards political enemies.” This is a terrible thing that should not be happening in the most beautiful country on Earth.

Trump’s longtime Democratic foes took a different approach. They said that no one should be exempted from prosecution for wrongdoing, but that they should face the charges in court.

Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives wrote on Twitter: “The Grand Jury has acted on the facts and the laws. No one is above law and everyone has the right of a trial to prove their innocence.

“Hopefully, the former president will peacefully respect system, which grants him that rights,” she said.

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader, stated in a statement that “Mr. Trump is subject to all the laws of America. Trump will be able use the legal system and a jury, not politics to decide his fate. The case should not be subject to any outside influence, intimidation, or interference. I encourage Mr. Trump’s supporters and critics to allow the process to proceed peacefully and in accordance with the law.
