Jen Psaki highlighted Sunday the changing talking points and hypocrisies of several Donald Trump-supporting MAGA Republicans when discussing defunding police.
The five-minute segment of “Inside With Jen Psaki,” which is five minutes long, shows how, despite many elected representatives rallying around “backing blue” and heralding law and order in the 2020 aftermathshocks for George Floyd’s death, the likes Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz — and even Florida Governor — are not backing the blue. Ron DeSantis — have changed since Trump’s indictment.
Psaki stated that “after all their outrages and fear mongering they are the ones who want defund law enforcement.” She spoke on her MSNBC show.
The segment began by highlighting the fact that the Republican Party began to portray itself as the “defenders” of law and order during the Nixon administration while portraying Democrats in a soft-on-crime mode. This message was repeated in Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and in 2020 by his political allies as a response to Floyd’s passing.
Many Democrats were calling for the reallocation of police funds and other social service funds to better combat police violence. This initiative was boiled down to the protestors’ cry to “defund police.”
Greene described it as a “Democratic war on police” at the time. In a video Psaki requested, Gaetz claims that they will disarm you, empty your prisons, lock up you in your house, and invite MS13 next door. The police aren’t coming when you call and in Democrat-run towns, they’re already being defunded and disbanded.
Psaki obviously poked holes in Trump’s call to “law and Order”, considering that he is the only president ever to be indicted.
She said that “Ironically the ‘law & order’ candidate in 2016 who led chants of “lock her up” about his Democratic opponent is now facing 34 felonies.” “And his Tuesday arraignment might just be the beginning of many courtroom appearances. He could also face possible federal indictments for his role on January 6th and his handling of classified information.
She said that the ex-president is not the only one displaying his “hypocrisy about crime”. “You don’t have to look far for more examples. In an attempt to protect Donald Trump’s rights, these same defenders of law order are also waging an attack on law enforcement.
“Inside” aired then videos of DeSantis and Jordan calling for defunding of the police.
DeSantis stated that the FBI and DOJ are not accountable if they don’t hold them accountable through legislative process.
Jordan stated earlier this month that “we’re going to have to look at appropriations and limit funds going towards some of these agencies.”
Gaetz stated March 3 that “We either get the government back on our side or we defund, get rid of, abolish, and get rid of the FBI, CDC. ATF, DOJ — all of them.”
Greene stated that in August 2022, “We must defund the Department of Justice and make cuts in its operations.”
“You guessed it: Republicans seem to have come full circle. Psaki stated that after all their outrage, fear mongering, it turns out they are the ones who want defund law enforcement. Remember, the job the justice department has is more than just to file abstract legal briefs. It is to protect our country. This phrase is in their mission statement. They also oversee the FBI which deals with domestic and international terrorist organizations, white collar crime, and the ATF. [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives]The, which plays an important role in fighting drug cartels. These so-called champions for law and order want to defund and limit funds and make cuts to these very agencies — those are their words and not mine.
The host explained that these values don’t just influence Republican rhetoric; they are also evident in the actions of these politicians, whether it’s in visiting Jan. 6 insurrection prisoners in jail or Trump himself while president, who proposed cutting funding to local law enforcement.
“So, if you are concerned about crime and want law enforcement fully funded and supported,” Psaki concluded.
